Snake oil Salesman

How many times have you heard the Old Testament saints had the Law but we have grace?  We preach from many pulpits in America a false gospel that says since Christ, God has been a gracious God because of Christ.  With this so called truth we have traded The Gospel According to the Gospel for snake oil.

You have heard it said:

(Speaking of Abraham)

This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”  The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness–for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.[1]

But we say:

For us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

We have be taught in such a way as to think that “the God” of the old Testament is an angry, crotchety God, who throws lightning bolts and takes joy in slaying whole people groups, while Christ is the demonstration of God’s love.  We completely ignore that it was “the God” of the Old Testament who established His covenant of love.  With this so called truth we have traded The Gospel According to the Gospel for snake oil.

You have heard it said:

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.[2]

But we say:

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, angrily administering his wrath to a thousand generations to those who does not like and can’t keep His favor.

We teach to those who are lost, they need to accept God’s love in order to be saved.  We have ignored the fact that the problem isn’t with God demonstrating His love.  The problem is with our sin and rebellion.  With this so called truth we have traded The Gospel According to the Gospel for snake oil.

You have heard it said:

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.[3]

But we say:

I tell you, no!  But unless you receive God’s love, you too will all… uhm, uhm, you won’t have His love.

Our teachers tell us that we can receive eternal life, if only we come down to the altar and receive it.  We complement each other and congratulate each other about our receiving of eternal life.  We have tossed aside the words of Christ.  With this so called truth we have traded The Gospel According to the Gospel for snake oil.

You have heard it said:

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields–and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.[4]

But we say:

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields–and with them, persecutions) and eternal life

So step right up folks.  Don’t be afraid of crowding, there is room for everybody and plenty of elixir to go around.

  1. The gospel according to Marcion! Check your church history. (Marcion, 100-165) One of the first to challenge the biblical theology of the early church. Marcion accepted only St. Paul, and rejected the OT as mere Law. But, his single most important contribution was his effort to draw up a canon of the New Testament. But he was certainly heterodox! Heresy is foremost (my choice), over the orthodox Church Body, and the full biblical magisterium. The True Church and Gospel is always “historical”!

  2. It is funny how Marcion was a St. Paul man and yet did not see in Paul’s writing the gospel that Paul preached out of the Law of Moses and the Prophets. I certainly do not understand the mindset of the Old Testament as Law only and irrelevant, even in churches today.

  3. Yes indeed, how can someone understand St. Paul, without knowing that Paul was first “Saul”, the Jewish Pharisee. The Law is always something that is central in Paul’s NT theology. Galatians will always be St. Paul’s “Gospel”! (Note, Gal. 3: 1, etc. 22-29)

    • Like Luther, it is always..Law/Grace. The law must, again must come first! Christ died because of the Law of God also..(Gal. 3: 13). And the moral law of God is always with the Christian, 1 Cor. 9:21.

  4. Yes indeed Christ died because of the Law. But in this law is found the gospel we believe in. This is why Jesus said it would be Moses who condemns the Pharisees, because he wrote about Him.
The book of Hebrews also says this gospel was preached at Mt. Sinai. So for Marcion to miss this was huge.
Saul missed it, until God set him apart for the ministry. After this Paul, preached the gospel found in the Law.
So for us today, like those of the Old Testament, it is putting our hope in the faith of the Law, not the Law of the faith.

  5. “It is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” Rom. 2:13 FYI. A Word has been added to the law by Jesus’ crucifixion. Your salvation from the wrath of God is predicated upon hearing the only Way this added law can be obeyed.

Give me a piece of your mind, let me know what you thought.
