What blessings of Abraham do we share in?

Paul makes a very interesting statement in the book of Galatians.  He says that the purpose of Christ was to qualify us gentiles to receive what was given to Abraham.

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.[1]

This goes contrary to our church gospel, since we in church seam to assume that we New Testament believers get all the good stuff because of Christ, while those of the Old Testament were stuck with legalism.  However Paul, of whom we say we follow his doctrine, teaches something completely different than what we believe.

It isn’t that we as New Testament believers get all the good stuff and those poor saps of the Old Testament get all the inconsequential stuff.  We through Christ get to participate in what was a blessing to Abraham.  And what was Abraham blessed with?

What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[2]

Abraham was blessed with imputed righteousness.  His blessing was God crediting him righteousness that he did not deserve.  So is his righteousness just like ours or is our righteousness just like his?

being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.  This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”  The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness–for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.[3]

We now get to share in this undeserved credited righteousness through Christ.  What God gave to Abraham and his descendants was also intended for us through His Son.  So it isn’t that the Old Testament saints only had available to them a righteousness through the Law.  They had it through faith as their circumcision testified too.  I talked more of this in yesterdays post “More proof in the pudding”.  So it is not that Abraham’s imputed righteousness is like ours.  Instead we get to share in Abraham’s blessing of imputed righteousness through Christ.

Now having a righteousness not our own just like our father Abraham and this through Christ, we too get to share in the Holy Spirit, just as Paul said in Galatians.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.[4]

So let us rejoice in the true gospel of our salvation and reject the gospel that comes from church pulpits, who teach the Old Testament has become null and void.  For the truth of the matter is that what is found in the Old Testament is now shared with us through Christ.  And this is not the gospel according to man but The Gospel According to the Gospel.

  1. Your first sentence makes no sense! Abraham is the Father of Faith, and himself centered in the Covenant of Grace and Faith! And in fact our baptism is the NT sign & seal of the “circumcision” of Christ’s death & resurrection, (Col. 2: 11-15). Again, and listen please? The Covenant of Grace is seen in both Testaments!

    Baptism by water or by the Holy Spirit? I see the NT sign and seal of ‘circumcision’ as the transformation of the heart from that of carnality to one like Christ’s…by His power and regeneration through and by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit..

    Christ (Grace) is the ‘fulfillment’ of the Law. Law is not complete without Grace (power to keep the righteousness of God…from the heart). Redemption was always preordained for both Jew and Gentile by the ‘election’ of Grace (Seven thousand(meaning the exact number is known only to God) Jews left to come by the ‘election’ of grace/ Gentiles. The spiritually blind and deaf ‘remnant’ will, too, come by Grace as they have their understanding opened to recognize Messiah (by the prophesying of the two witnesses/ Moses and Elias/Elijah/Rev. 11: 3-1).

    If we are of the faith of Abraham..we are Abraham. And so all Israel shall be saved.

    Thank you. Indeed, in Col. 2: 11-15, the reference is to both baptism in water and also the Spirit. Baptism is itself both a ‘sign & seal’ of the Christians death and resurrection in and with Christ. And circumcision was both a sign of cutting off from sin, and the reality of new life and covenant relationship with God. In Scripture Baptism is always a sign & seal of death and life. We see this wonderfully in 1 Peter 3: 21, baptism is the antitype (like figure) of the waters of the great flood, which brought death, but also life (verse 20)…”while the ark was being prepared, in which a few (again the elect), that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.”

    The Ark prefigured Christ: our Ark. The water of the deluge brings death to sin, and carries the eight to safety. Water here also prefigured the Death of Christ upon the cross, (John 19:34). It is the judgment of sin. And our, the believers safety (dry ground)…The Resurrection of Christ. (Rom. 4:25). This is the spiritual meaning of Baptism for the Christian. Christ our Ark, His Death and Cross, the water of ruin for sin. The Resurrection of Christ our only safety. Again, Baptism is a sign & seal of both death and new life!

    I might add, I am like Calvin and some other Reformers who saw Baptism as more than a mere symbol, but the means by ‘sign & seal’ of the Christian’s death and new life. Thus I am not Zwinglian, but not Lutheran. Since I am an Anglican, I see the Sacraments as “certain sure witnesses, and effectual signs of grace, and God’s good will towards us, by the which he doth work invisibly in us, and doth not only quicken, but also strengthen and confirm our Faith in him.” (Anglican Article XXV)

  4. Sorry Dave,

    I get my share of e-mail, and after I delete it. It seems I did that with yours? It yours with the blue in it, as I remember? But we can just let it pass, since there is some agreement with us on the subject. I can see what your driving at. But true Calvinism does not dimnish the Old Testament at all. In fact it sees the covenant of grace in both Testaments, with Abraham the Father of Faith.
