The Holy Spirit and the hope of salvation

Many feel that the deposit of the Holy Spirit is the shoe in that they have received their salvation.  Ignoring the scriptural teaching discussed in yesterdays post “Salvation the hope”.  We so stubbornly want to posses what scripture teaches we have to live our lives out till the end in order to make our hope sure.

We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.[1]

Speaking of the hope, scripture teaches us we have this hope through the washing rebirth and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.[2]

Is God suffering from duplicity in His word when He mixes saved with the hope of eternal life in the same group of verses?  Certainly not, for our God is a God that calls things that are not as if they were, not things that are as if they were not.  So we can be confident we have hope of salvation but God can see the finished work long before it is done.

After being included in Christ through our faith in the word of truth, we as believers are set apart by the Holy Spirit which serves as a seal.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,[3]

The purpose of this seal is to mark us for the day of redemption.  The day Christ comes back to bring us our salvation.  This is why it is so important to not grieve the Holy Spirit.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.[4]

On the contrary we are to guard this good deposit with the help of the Holy Spirit.  For there is a difference between those who guard the deposit of the Holy Spirit and those who grieve the Holy Spirit.

Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you–guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.[5]

The one who after believing the message of our gospel and received the deposit of the Holy Spirit and yes even the power of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, will die in their sins if they fall away.  There is no guarantee that the deposit will bring us to the day of our redemption if we break the seal by falling away from the faith our hope.  It is not the Holy Spirit who breaks faith with us, but us with Him when we fall away into disobedience.

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.[6]

So it is not impossible for someone who has been given the washing or renewal and rebirth by the Holy Spirit to grieve Him so as to offend Him and loose all hope of salvation.  This is why we are instructed not to believe in vain.

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.[7]

We have to hold firmly to what we have in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives and this to the end, in order to make our hope sure, or we will have believed and fellowshipped with the Holy Spirit in vain.

  1. I am currently studying the Greek for hope and salvation, prompted by these recent posts and reading through your Mystery of God posts. When you uses these words, what exactly do you mean by them? Also, I hope you do not see these comments of mine as antagonistic or confrontational, your blog has caught my attention as I’ve looked for similar blogs to one I’m writing and I found this one. I was with you at first until this salvation part came up. It is my hope we can openly dialog about these heavy spiritual matters, because much like you from what I’ve seen here, I am believer seeking the truth in a religion that has led us astray from the truth in my opinion.

    • Robert,

I totally agree with you that the bill of good we have been sold in the church has lead us astray. I always say we have been left a lousy spiritual inheritance from the generation before us. That we need to forsake the god of our spiritual fathers for the God of Scripture.

What will we leave behind? I think these discussions and the inputs from everyone are important to help us all discover what we are to be and how we are to live and who are God is.

I do know your frustration with the Samericans.

  2. Amen! Amen! We MUST rightly discern the Word through the teaching of the Holy Spirit. God intends the Word to be beyond understanding to non-believers. And many have turned their own discernment of Truth into traditions for the Church. ….namely ‘once saved always saved.’ God is able but man must be willing to submitt to God’s ‘renewal’ plan.

When the Word says in John 10:29 “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand”….the phrase must then…be tempored with 2 Peter 2:21 “For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ” THE TWO TOGETHER MAKE ONE TRUTH. The Truth is…”Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
Jude 1:25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and for ever. Amen. ”

God is clearly able and desires that none ‘perish’. But as Judas, who had fellowshipped with the Son of God, who had seen the restoration POWER of His miracles, and who CHOSE to submit to the fleshly and carnal lust of greed ….LOST HIS SALVATION!!!!

Many scholars argue that Judas was not ‘lost’ …but that he was, from the beginning, the Son of Perdition. NOT SO! Christ said otherwise.

“Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. ” Christ said, NONE OF THEM IS LOST, BUT THE SON OF PERDITION;” Scripture prophesied, foresaw, foretold the betrayal of Christ. Judas BECAME the Son of Perdition, Son of Satan….after he rejected Christ’s teachings. And it didn’t happen overnight. I’m sure…like we…that he began with small deceptions, justifications, rationalizations…and distortions of truth. He probably told himself that, ‘hey, Jesus is the son of God…so He will come out okay..and I’ll have thirty pieces of silver.” Satan is, afterall, the ‘most subtle deceiver.’ Finally, Judas reached the point of no return…and became fully ruled by Satan. Judas BLASPHEMED…and committed the unforgiveable sin. And as scripture says, ‘Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” JUDAS HANGED HIMSELF BY THE COMMAND OF SATAN WHO HAD POWER OVER HIM. Satan is, afterall, the DESTROYER. Judas COULD NOT repent.

Too, Revelations 9:20-21 records a future instance similar to that of Judas. The people experiencing the fierce wrath of God on the wicked…did not REPENT because they COULD NOT REPENT! THEY ARE DAMNED!!!

(Re 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: ) All who affiliate with Satan are, indeed, Sons of Perdition. Judas had once KNOWN THE WAY or Christ would not have called him…LOST.

The following verse speakes to Judas’s situation: Mt 18:7 “Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! ”

Someone would betray Christ…but God left the ‘who’ open to individual CHOICE. And Judas CHOSE ultimate carnality!!

Are we different to Judas?. We profess a ‘walk’ with Christ…but when confronted with temptations of the flesh….we yield to glutony, backbiting, feasting, lying, fornications of all kinds (adultery, homosexuality, lusting in the heart), judging, hypocrisy, and all sins common to man. As Light has no fellowship with darkness, neither does Righteousness have fellowship with sin.

You are dead on with this post. One final scripture could be the actual ‘sealing’ of the saints in the Sixth Seal…at Christ’s Second Coming in Revelation.

(Re 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
Re 7:2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
Re 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. )

TRULY…He brings SALVATION with Him at His return.

  3. You wrote –
…received the deposit of the Holy Spirit and yes even the power of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, will die in their sins if they fall away.”
Hebrews did not say that as you implied. AS you quoted it said –
“it is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.[6]”
Tasted is the key word. These hebrew jews wanted to go back to their old works in the temple. Their old system. They are warned here not to go back to their works based system but to come to repentance so to be saved. This passage is not about losing ones salvation but about gaining salvation! About gaining the holy spirits gift of a new heart to see christ crucified and receive this gift. Too many people thing this passage is talking about losing salvation but they need to read the whole book to understand what is occurring! We are never to return to our works for Christ alone and his works alone are sufficient. This is about bringing them to the new birth so to be saved after all they heard and even tasted of. Never had they received the deposit of the holy spirit as you said here. Going back to our works is to lose any hoe of salvation so to be saved. We would began to crucify christ all over again.
Read hebrews, study it, pray about it and come to your senses so to receive christ our savior for all our sins. Do not crucify his again by saying he did not complete the work he begun.! He finished it!

    • Bruce Potter,

Is this any different than any man who has tasted the Lord and backslid? Do the Jews own the corner on this one, or is this applicable to all men?

Are you enlightened? Have you tasted the goodness of God? Have you ever moved in the power of the Holy Spirit? Then this verse is a warning for you, a believer.

Those who do not understand the truths of scripture or live by them are not enlightened.

On my web site I argue over and over we have a hope of salvation and await it at Christ return.

As far as Christ completing the work He has done, do you not know that in Revelation it is revealed that not all the work of Christ is done. He has yet to officially make us His people and He our God.

We are living our lives out in the hope of our salvation to see who is and who isn’t the wise and faithful servant.

I did a post called “More than nothing left to do”. I encourage you to read it. Go to the bottom and click previous post. You will find it there.

  4. Hi.
I found your Web Site by Google
And I wish you the best you can get,
the peace of God through Jesus Christ.

    Welcome to visit my Site.
    Allan Svensson, Sweden

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world
for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
    Matt. 24:14.

Has this been fulfilled? Both yes and no. By radio, TV,
books and magazines, E-mails and Websites on the
Internet, it is possible to reach out above the whole world.
We can say that God’s gospel has been spread out above
the whole world. The problem is that those who are
preaching, and those who are writing in books and
magazines and Websites on the Internet, they have an
insufficient knowledge of God’s word. They have not
learnt the first fundamentals of the gospel of God.

Yet, on the Internet there are many preachers who are writing
and speaking about the great Babylon, but their sermons
become only a half measure. They explain the truth only partly,
and they do not understand that their own church and their own
denomination also belong to the great Babylon.

Those who ought to be teachers, yet need to get teaching.
Hebr. 5:12. This is the state of most Christians today. They
are not able to preach or teach about the Assembly of God,
or about the baptism by the Holy Spirit. They are lacking
of this knowledge. They believe that the Assembly of God
is a Pentecostal church. Please, consider what this expression
“the Assembly of God” in the reality implies. The Assembly
of God must be the same as the Greek word “ecclesia”, and
the Body of Christ. 1 Cor. 12:12-31.

Then it is easy to understand that this has nothing to do
with the Pentecostal Movement. Pentecostal churches have
existed about 100 years, but the Assembly of God has existed
ever since Jesus baptized his first disciples by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit gave them the new life in Christ so that they
became born anew. Then the Assembly of God was born.
Since then, the Assembly of God has lived here on the earth
    generation after generation.

The truth of the Assembly of God has never been preached
in the churches. Therefore, God’s people are totally
unprepared for Jesus’ coming. It is very urgent that all
God’s people understand the truth of the Assembly of God.

Nowhere in the Bible can, we find any hint of that the
Assembly of God is any church system, or that the church
buildings are temples of God, neither that the Assembly of
God is any organized movement. A living body cannot
become an organization, and an organization cannot become
a living body. Therefore, the Assembly of God cannot become
an organization. Nowhere in the Bible can, we read that they
    organized a local assembly.

In the reality, the word “church” does not occur in the Bible.
I have five bible translations in Swedish. Nowhere in these
Bibles we can find the word “church” (kyrka). All churches
and free churches are religious black buildings, not founded
    on God’s word.

What does hinder the Antichrist to appear?
    What is the Restrainer?

    God is the Love
But God’s love does not hinder us to study God’s word

    Where is Jesus’ church?
Where is the church that Jesus built?

Why did the Pentecostal Revival take an end?

The truth of the baptism by the Holy Spirit and the new birth

In the free churches the world around
    there are thousands of preachers
and bible teachers, but none can explain
what the Assembly of God is

The condition of the Assembly of God
is now much worse than in the assemblies
    in Ephesus, Sardis and Laodicea
